What is the difference between relaxation massage and therapeutic massage?
Despite the name differences, both techniques are therapeutic in different ways.
A relaxation massage is performed with the intention of helping the client relax. A typical session incorporates medium to light pressure strokes designed to calm and restore. While therapeutic massage is often relaxing, the end goal of the session is to relieve pain and discomfort. Often recommended by health professionals, as part of a larger treatment plan therapeutic massage is intended to affect specific areas of the body (unlike relaxation massage, which is generally full body) and is frequently used to alleviate symptoms associated with repetitive strain or stress injuries, postural imbalances, chronic aches and pains, arthritis, TMJ or fibromyalgia. Unlike a relaxation massage, which normally use Swedish massage techniques, a therapeutic massage often incorporates more specific modalities such as deep tissue massage and trigger points to achieve the desired goal.
How often should I have a massage session?
Everyone is different and the frequency of your massage sessions should be determined by your goal. Keep in mind that the accumulative effective of massage is always going to be greater then the benefit of any one-treatment session.
I find that clients who need massage therapy for pain relief realize the greatest gains in their healing when they receive regular once or twice weekly appointments. As preventative care, monthly massages prove very beneficial and are recommended as part of your wellness plan.
How will I feel afterwards?
That will depend on what issues you are looking to address. Some people experience increased energy and heightened awareness, some feel more relaxed and some (depending on the serious of their issue, i.e., chronic muscle spasm, soft tissue inflammation, or other soft tissue injury) experience freedom from long-term aches and pains developed from tension or repetitive activity.
Are there any medical conditions that make massage or bodywork inadvisable?
Yes. It is very important that you inform me of any health problems or medications you are taking before beginning your session. If you are under a doctor's care, I advise you to receive a written recommendation for massage or bodywork before beginning your session and I may require a recommendation or approval from your doctor.
Must I fully undress for massage?
Do what makes you feel most comfortable. Some people prefer to keep their underwear on during a massage, while others prefer to be completely undressed. Clothing can limit muscle accessibility (particularly if your problem areas are located in your lower back, hips or buttocks) so thongs for women or speedos for men are a good compromise. Throughout the massage you are always properly covered (draped) by a sheet or towel, with only the area being massaged remaining uncovered. I will leave the room and provide complete privacy while you undress, and only enter the room once instructed to do so. Please ensure that you are beneath the top sheet on the massage table.
Can I talk to my massage therapist during the session?
Communication regarding your experience is what enables me to give you the best massage possible. This is your session, so whatever feels natural to you is the best way to relax. If you want to close your eyes, fall asleep or prefer to talk, feel free. Do not hesitate to ask me questions at any time. However I do recommend that you avoid general chit chat so you care able to fully relax and receive the full benefit of your treatment. Please remember to silence your phone before your session begins.
